Sulfur and phosphorus have a negative impact on the toughness of steel as they tend to form brittle inclusions. For example, sulfur can combine with iron to form iron sulfide (FeS), which has a low melting point and can cause hot shortness, reducing the steel’s ability to withstand deformation without cracking. A proper casting speed ensures a uniform solidification structure, while an appropriate cooling rate helps to refine the grain size of the steel. A finer grain size generally leads to better toughness as it provides more grain boundaries, which can impede the propagation of cracks.

In the rolling process, the reduction ratio and the rolling temperature are two critical factors. A higher reduction ratio during hot rolling can break down the coarse grains formed during casting and promote the formation of a more uniform and fine – grained structure. The rolling temperature should be carefully controlled within a specific range. If the rolling temperature is too high, the grains may grow coarse, reducing the toughness. On the other hand, if the temperature is too low, the steel may become too hard and brittle, leading to cracking during rolling.

4. Heat Treatment

Heat treatment is a powerful tool for improving the toughness of hot rolled coils. Normalizing, quenching, and tempering are common heat – treatment processes. Normalizing involves heating the steel to a temperature above the critical point and then air – cooling. This process refines the grain structure and improves the mechanical properties, including toughness.

Quenching is a rapid cooling process that can significantly increase the hardness of the steel. However, quenched steel is often brittle. Therefore, tempering is usually carried out after quenching. Tempering involves reheating the quenched steel to a lower temperature and then cooling it at a controlled rate. This process relieves the internal stresses generated during quenching and improves the toughness of the steel while maintaining a certain level of hardness.

5. Quality Control and Testing

Throughout the production process of hot rolled coils, strict quality control and testing are essential to ensure the desired toughness. Non – destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MT), and eddy – current testing (ET) can be used to detect internal and surface defects in the coils. Destructive testing methods, including tensile testing, impact testing, and hardness testing, are also carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of the steel.

Tensile testing measures the strength and ductility of the steel, providing information on its ability to withstand stretching forces. Impact testing, such as the Charpy V – notch test, assesses the toughness of the steel by measuring the energy absorbed during fracture under impact loading. Hardness testing helps to determine the hardness of the steel, which is related to its strength and toughness. By regularly conducting these tests, any deviations from the quality standards can be detected early, and appropriate adjustments can be made to the production process.

6. Surface Treatment

Surface treatment can also have an impact on the toughness of hot rolled coils. Coating the coils with protective layers such as zinc or paint can prevent corrosion, which can weaken the steel over time and reduce its toughness. Zinc coating, also known as galvanizing, provides a sacrificial layer that corrodes preferentially, protecting the underlying steel. Paint coatings can act as a barrier, preventing moisture and oxygen from reaching the steel surface.

In addition to corrosion protection, surface treatment can also improve the surface finish of the coils. A smooth surface finish reduces stress concentrations, which are potential sites for crack initiation. This helps to maintain the integrity of the steel and improve its toughness.
